Hungarian incumbent Magyar Telekom, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, said it will launch interactive satellite TV services on 1 December 2011.
Operating under the Interactive Sat TV brand, the new platform will use a hybrid technological solution to deliver satellite TV with internet connections.
“The new proposition offers interactive functions, digital audio and picture quality, even HD quality channel assortment as well as electronic program guide,” Magyar Telekom said in a statement.
Recently, several satellite TV companies worldwide have been looking to provide wireless broadband services as they face growing competition from technology giants such as Google, Apple and Netflix, which are currently seeking to roll out video-on-demand streaming services.
Magyar Telekom has been providing an IPTV services, known as T-Home IPTV, since 2006. It also operates a DTH platform, T-Home Sat TV.
It has not been revealed whether Interactive Sat TV will come in addition to Sat TV or whether it will replace existing services. The company was not immediately available for comment before the press deadline.
Besides the services provided by Magyar Telekom, Hungary is home to another three DTH platforms: Hungary’s Hello HD (operating from Eurobird 9); Romanian Digi TV (Thor 6 and Intelsat 10-02); and Liberty Global-owned UPC Direct (Thor 5).
The Eastern European DTH market has recently seen a wave of consolidation, with Poland, Czech Republic and Romania all witnessing merger deals.
