UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has released a consultation on reserving planned LTE spectrum for use during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Anticipating a surge in demand during the games, the regulator hopes that reserving ahead of time will guarantee it the capacity to support services such as wireless camera applications.
According to Ofcom, widespread deployment of LTE is unlikely to be completed before the end of 2012. Although the 2.6GHz spectrum will be auctioned off with the 800MHz band at the end of 2011, the regulator said radar equipment operating in the 2.7GHz band needs to be upgraded before LTE can be introduced.
For this reason, it believes that the spectrum can be more usefully employed to support the Olympics, which will take place in 2012 between July 27 and September 9.
