US based telco Leap Wireless has entered into a JV with Texan mobile service operator Pocket Communications, in an effort to strengthen its position in the region.
The deal sees wireless operator Leap Wireless take a controlling stake in the new entity.
Pocket Communications is a privately owned month-to-month mobile telephony service provider.
Although the deal is a minor one, it has been described as significant in that it shows the continued trend for larger operators to snap up or merge with smaller regional telcos across the US. Leap is also reported to be mulling a merger with fellow operator MetroPCS.
The transaction sees Leap take a 76% stake in the JV, with Pocket owning the remaining shares. The deal is expected to close this year and covers both Pocket’s operating assets and wireless spectrum licences.
