Jean-Yves Le Gall, chairman and CEO of launch provider Arianespace, has been appointed at the head of France’s space agency, Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES).
He replaces Yannick d’Escatha, who joined CNES in 2003. It is not yet known who will become Arianespace’s next CEO.
Trained as an engineer and scientist, Le Gall joined the launch provider in 2001.
Throughout his career, Le Gall has focused on the European space programme, including a series of positions with the French national scientific research agency CNRS, the French Ministry of Industry, Novespace, as well as CNES.
Le Gall is often credited with contributing to the development and success of the Ariane 5 launcher. Last week, speaking in front of the French senate, he also insisted on the necessity to push ahead with Ariane 6 in order for the company to remain competitive in face of other launchers including SpaceX.
