Kuwait’s largest telco, Zain is interested in bidding for Syria’s third mobile phone licence, report Syrian newspaper Al Rai and Reuters.
Al Rai also speculates that Turkcell is also interested in the third licence.
As reported yesterday, the government of Syria announced that it will be approving a third mobile operating licence for the country. Dates for tender will be announced in the coming weeks.
The government also said that it would be turning the contracts of the two current operators, MTN Syria and Syriatel Mobile, which both have Build-Operate-Transfer status into full-blown licences.
However, a spokesperson from Zain told TelecomFinance: “As a matter of policy, Zain never comments on any matter regarding M&A activities. We have an obligation to advise the Kuwait Stock Exchange should we ever make a bid, before advising media.”
Turkcell was also mystified at the story. A spokesperson from Turkey’s largest mobile operator said: “We can neither confirm nor deny this rumour, as the board of directors has not made any decisions on our interest, or lack of interest, in bidding for the third Syrian mobile licence.”
