Brussels-based trade body Cable Europe has appointed Matthias Kurth, the former president of Germany’s telecoms regulator, as its new executive chairman.
As well as serving as president of the German Federal Network Agency, which also regulates the postal, energy and railway markets – Kurth chaired the European Regulators Group in 2009 in an effort to “increase regulatory cooperation at the EU level”, Cable Europe said in a statement.
Previously, Kurth worked as a judge and lawyer, and also worked for the economics ministry of the German federal state of Hesse in the years 1994 to 1999.
Commenting on Kurth’s appointment, Cable Europe president, Manuel Kohnstamm, said: ““Matthias brings extraordinary oversight of our sector given his experience in helping to drive Germany’s broadband take-up, running Europe’s first spectrum auctions for mobile broadband and serving as the chair of the European Regulators Group at a time of crucial regulatory reform in European telecoms.”
Cable Europe’s stated aim is to “promote and defend” the industry’s policies and business interests internationally and foster competition among members, which include cable TV operators and national associations.
Kohnstamm, recently appointed chief policy officer for Liberty Global, will continue as president of the trade body.
