Kosovan telecoms regulator ARKEP has launched a sales process for LTE-suitable 1800 MHz airwaves, which may pave the way for a new market entrant.
The move follows an application earlier this year from Ipko Telecommunications, part of the Telekom Slovenije group, for additional 1800MHz spectrum, the regulator explained in a statement.
PTK, the country’s sole other mobile network operator, has also expressed interest in acquiring additional airwaves, the regulator said.
ARKEP chairman Ekrem Hoxha told the Kosova Press news agency that the tender could see the country gain a third mobile network operator.
Hoxha reportedly said that all those licensed to operate in Kosovo, including MVNOs Z-mobile and D3 Mobile, will be eligible to participate, along with international applicants which meet the criteria. This includes Serbian operators, he noted.
The type of sales process to be pursued (auction or tender) and prices are yet to be determined.
