Russian businessman Suleiman Kerimov is reportedly in talks to buy a 28% stake National Telecommunications (NTK), the cableco majority owned by Russian incumbent Rostelecom.
Suleiman Kerimov is also a Rostelecom minority shareholder.
Local news agency RBC reported Kerimov is negotiating the purchase of Gazprombank and VTB Capital’s combined stake in the cableco.
According to the report, a Rostelecom representative confirmed the telco, which owns 71.8% of NTK shares, is targeting the same stake.
Gazprombank and VTB received offers of Rbs4.53bn (US$150.56m) and Rbs6.45bn (US$214.5m) respectively for their NTK shareholdings in December 2011, the report said, adding that the Rostelecom board plans to place a higher offer on 21 February.
Kerimov bought a 5.8% stake in Rostelecom in November 2011, 3.1% of which he reportedly sold on recently to Mobitel. According to the Moscow Times, he is likely to sell his remaining 2.7% stake this year.
