Kenya’s spectrum auction has attracted interest form 17 parties, with eight of them being international bidders that teamed up with local players, Business Daily Africa reports.
The detailed article about the auction process states that international players that teamed up with local businesses include Ericsson, IBM, Cisco, Huawei, ZTE and Alcatel-Lucent.
Bidders are required to have at least 20% of local ownership, as a result of which Airtel is not among the bidders, while Safaricom, Telkom Kenya and Essar’s Yu are still able to take part.
The Kenyan government will begin with the evaluation process next week, the newspaper said with reference to Information Permanent Secretary Bitange Ndemo, and the announcement of the winner is expected for December. Under the rules, the licence will not be given away to an operator, but will be awarded to a consortium, which will include the Kenyan government, a mobile operator and a network developer.
