German cableco Kabel Deutschland (KDG) has announced plans to connect its regional head-ends to fibre.
By deploying a “glass fibre ring”, the group will be able to offer its customers analogue broadcasts after satellites cease transmitting them on 30 April 2012 (the digital switchover deadline), a spokesman explained to TelecomFinance.
No satellites will be involved whatsoever because the fibre ring will capable of distributing the analogue signals independently, he said.
Germany has more than 30 free analogue channels, and KDG estimates only 35% of the German population currently subscribe to digital TV services.
“We have very attractive free TV in Germany”, the spokesman said, adding that even with services such as HD companies like digital broadcaster Sky Deutschland are struggling to capture the German market.
KDG declined to disclose the financial details of its fibre investment.
