Israel’s communications minister Moshe Kahlon has approached the country’s Antitrust Authority Commissioner, Ronit Kan to investigate whether Israel’s cellcos should be sanctioned over recent call charge hikes.
Bloomberg reported that the Ministry of Communications was concerned about the country’s three mobile operators – Cellcom, Orange Israel (operated by Partner Communications) and Pelephone (owned by Bezeq) – all raising their charges on the same day.
The cellcos argued that they would have to increase their charges because of imminent reductions in interconnections rates mandated by the MoC.
However, a MoC spokesperson told Bloomberg that the trio should be declared an oligopoly and the Antitrust Authority should move to regulate the operators.
None of the operators were available for comment by the time of going to press.
