Japanese satellite operator and DTH provider Sky Perfect JSAT is part of a consortium bidding for a new nationwide mobile TV licence in Japan.
The consortium is led by Japanese telecoms operator NTT DoCoMo which set up Multimedia Broadcasting Company back in January 2009 in order to offer mobile TV services. The venture is majority owned by NTT with Sky Perfect JSAT, Nippon TV and Fuji TV all holding stakes.
The NTT consortium is vying for the new licence with mobile operator KDDI, with both parties having completed their pitches to the Japanese communications regulator. KDDI has also set up a new company, MediaFLO Broadcast Planning, for its planned service, with small stakes held by broadcasters TV Asahi and Space Shower Network, as well as advertising companies ADK, Dentsu and Hakuhodo. KDDI will own 82% of the venture.
