Both KDDI and NTT are battling it out for the new mobile TV licence in Japan
Both operators have completed their pitches and the Japanese government is mulling over the two proposals.
A MediaFLO service is the preferred option from KDDI, while NTT DOCoMo wants to use the Japanese standard ISDB-Terrestrial Mobile Multimedia platform.
KDDI has set up a new company, MediaFLO Broadcast Planning, for its planned service, with small stakes held by broadcasters TV Asahi and Space Shower Network, as well as advertising companies ADK, Dentsu and Hakuhodo. KDDI will own 82% of the venture.
In the opposing corner is NTT’s Multimedia Broadcasting Company, which was established in January 2009. It is capitalised at ¥840 million (US$10 million) and shareholders include satellite-TV platform operator Sky Perfect JSAT, Nippon TV, Fuji TV.
