Jamaica’s government has expressed concern about the planned acquisition of Claro Jamaica by Digicel Group, according to local media The Gleaner.
Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce Karl Samuda was quoted saying that he was concerned about the emergence of a monopoly situation.
Digicel, which reportedly has an estimated 88% of mobile market share in the country, is planning to integrate Claro Jamaica into its business.
In March Digicel announced it had agreed to buy Claro Jamaica from Mexican company America Movil for an undisclosed sum. As part of the deal, America Movil will acquire Digicel’s units in El Salvador and Honduras.
Digicel’s main rival in Jamaica, the fixed, mobile and ISP LIME, has called for regulators “to carefully assess the deal” before it is given approval.
LIME is owned by regional operator Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC).
