Israel’s communications ministry plans to hold a tender and allocate 4G spectrum in the near future, so that networks can be established this year.
Ministry of Communications director general Eden Bar-Tal intends to allocate spectrum to the telcos Pelephone Communications, HOT Mobile and Golan Telecom, according to Israeli business paper Globes. Cellcom Israel and Partner Communications already have frequencies in the 4G range, so will not be eligible to acquire more.
The tenders committee is due to meet and decide how the process will take place in the next few days, said the report.
It has been questioned whether Cellcom and Partner will be able to use their frequencies and set up 4G networks prior to the tender process. The ministry will prevent such a situation from developing, but has yet to clarify how, reported Globes.
Bar-Tal, Golan Telecom and Partner Communications did not respond to TelecomFinance in time for the deadline.
