Israeli retailer Rami Levi is to launch an MVNO running on the network of Pelephone, the mobile unit of incumbent Bezeq, reports Reuters. The service is due to start in Q3 of this year.
Pelephone also hosts another MVNO, Free Telecom, following an agreement in December 2010. Telecom 365, which won the country’s first MVNO licence, decided to opt for an agreement – also with Pelephone – under which the two will jointly market mobile services at Hamashbir department stores, Telecom 365’s parent company.
Starting in July 2011, Telecom 365 will provide sales, service and marketing on the network.
Gil Sharon, the CEO of Pelephone, was quoted saying that it was focused on “co-opetition” with its MVNOs, which represented a new source of revenue as well as increased competition.
Israeli officials are looking to boost competition in the telecoms sector, by offering MVNO licences as well as two new mobile licences due to be tendered this month.
