Colombian state-owned energy and telecoms company Isa has acquired Brazilian fibre-optic network operator NQT for R$190m (US$83m).
The deal will be financed with loans to be taken out in the Brazilian debt market and capital from Internexa Participacoes, Isa’s Brazilian telecoms subsidiary.
NQT is being sold by Portuguese conglomerate Grupo Nelson Quintas, which created the operator in 1999. NQT serves as a backbone operator in the state of Rio de Janeiro, catering to telcos and the corporate sector.
In a statement Isa said the acquisition was part of “its expansion strategy, in order to complement its value offer and expand its customer portfolio”.
HSBC is advising Isa and Credit Agricole is advising NQT, Bloomberg reported citing two people familiar with the matter.
Medellin-based Isa describes its telecoms division Internexa as a “carrier of carriers” and says it has a 12,029km fibre optic network integrating Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Venezuela.
Isa plans to acquire a further 6,000km of fibre in Brazil and Argentina as it aims to become the largest uninterrupted terrestrial network in South America.
