UK-based MSS operator Inmarsat has acquired Australian satcoms specialist TC Communications to strengthen is government and enterprise business in Asia.
Financial details were not disclosed. Inmarsat said the acquisition of TC Communications, which had 25 employees in 2012, will increase its team in Australia to 65 people.
TC Communications CEO Todd McDonnell will join the satellite operator as vice president of global government solutions, where he will oversee sales and operations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands.
Andy Start, president of Inmarsat’s global government division, said: “The strategic rationale is compelling. The acquisition of TC Communications brings strong VSAT, wideband global satcom system, aviation and solutions skills to Inmarsat’s global government and enterprise business units.”
According to Start, these skills will be particularly important as the company drives the take-up of its MSS constellation Global Xpress in the enterprise and government markets, as it prepares to launch the first satellite in the third quarter of this year.
The acquisition comes amid a recent spring of consolidation in Australia’s satcoms market. Empowered by a new private equity owner, Asian satellite broadband provider SpeedCast bought Australian satcoms provider Pactel in April, after last year snapping up Australian Satellite Communications.
