Norwegian telecoms group Telenor inched closer in its battle to be allowed to bid in India’s upcoming 2G auction without a local partner, after a ministerial panel endorsed a plan to allow foreign telcos to participate.
The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM), headed by finance minister P Chidambaram, made the decision on Wednesday, according to media reports.
Foreign entities looking to bid in the 2G spectrum auction will currently be unable to bid without a local partner.
Telenor had entered into a JV with real estate company Unitech, but as TelecomFinance previously reported, is looking for a new partner following a bitter dispute over management.
When approached today, Telenor refused to comment on the matter prior to the auction.
