The Indian government sent today a formal notice to mobile operators ordering them to ensure that they have equipment to monitor BlackBerry services by the end of the month, according to several media reports citing telco companies.
This move will allow Indian security agencies to access encrypted messages carried on the mobile operators’ networks.
The Indian government has said it would shut down BlackBerry services unless its Canadian maker Research in Motion (RIM) gave security agencies access by 31 August.
According to Reuters citing a senior government source, the Canadian company said today it was ready to allow Indian authorities greater access to data transmitted between its handsets.
In recent weeks, several countries have threatened to ban the use of BlackBerry, including Saudi Arabia, arguing it posed a security risk. But a few days ago, Saudi Arabia reached an agreement with RIM to set up a server for the service within the Kingdom.
