Four Indian operators have been allotted spectrum that will enable them to offer high-speed mobile broadband services.
According to The Economic Times, Reliance subsidiary Infotel, Bharti Airtel, Aircel and Tikona Digital have each been given 20Mhz of spectrum by the government, providing the platform to get services up and running.
Infotel has reportedly received spectrum in all of India’s 22 operating circles, while Bharti has received it for only four.
A further two companies, Qualcom and Augere will all be handed spectrum once they secure telecom licences.
The allocation of spectrum is likely to kick start a frenzied period for equipment vendors who will be vying for the contracts to deliver LTE and WiMAX networks.
