The Indian government has lifted a ban on Indian mobile operators Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices buying equipment from Chinese manufacturers Huawei and ZTE, according to reports.
The ban reportedly arose due to Indian government concerns that broadband devices could contain spying technologies.
Last week, the ban on state-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) was also lifted, according to comments cited to junior telecoms minister Sachin Pilot.
A study released by research firm ISuppli yesterday explained that ZTE and Huawei may have faced slower sales growth due to India’s concerns regarding security risks. Citing the Economic Times, the study said that by the end of June, about 450 orders from vendors worldwide had been put on hold due to the security clearance process.
The Indian government and the telecom companies could not be reached for comment.
