The managing director of Indian cellco Idea Cellular, Sanjeev Aga, will stand down from his post effective 1 April, according to a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange.
No reasons have been given for the resignation but Aga will continue as director on the company’s board. He will be replaced by Himanshu Kapania, a director in charge of the southern and western regions.
This resignation comes in the wake of the 2G scam scandal in India, although Idea has not been named as one of the companies that may see its licences cancelled.
But telecom minister Kapil Sibal recently said he would meet the executives of several Indian telcos, including Idea, in order to discuss the issues affecting the sector.
In a separate report, Idea said, back in October, that it was regularly considering business proposals. This followed media reports suggesting that investors including Etisalat had approached the company to buy a stake.
Idea is part of Indian conglomerate the Aditya Birla Group.
