Costa Rican state-owned telecoms monopoly Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has filed a court motion against telecoms regulator Sutel over proposed interconnection rate cuts.
Announcing the suit, ICE president Eduardo Doryan Garron said the cuts would fundamentally affect the company’s profitability, reported local newspaper El Financiero.
Cabinet minister Marco Vargas, however, condemned the move as another attempt to delay the privatisation of ICE, which has enjoyed a monopoly for over 70 years.
The privatisation process is being forced through by President Laura Chinchilla’s government on the back of Costa Rica signing up to the Central American Free Trade Association (CAFTA), which insists on competition in the telecoms market.
