Costa Rican incumbent El Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) is looking for opportunities for growth outside Costa Rica, as the domestic market is opened up to competitors, according to local media reports.
America Movil and Telefonica were awarded spectrum licences by the Costa Rican telecoms regulator SUTEL earlier in January. If the awards are approved by the government, the two companies could start operating their networks in September.
ICE’s plans for international expansion are thought to be part of a strategy to increase the strength of the company against this new competition.
Costa Rican newspaper La Nacion reported on Friday that the director of ICE’s international business, Orlando Cascante, said that the company had identified some target countries and will make announcements in the coming days.
