The UK government is seeking ideas for new telecoms laws in its first step to establishing an updated Communications Act in 2015.
According to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the feedback will support a wide-ranging review it is conducting to guarantee a regulatory framework that is fit for the digital age.
“Our ambition is to establish UK communications and media markets as amongst the most dynamic and successful in the world, with the review process culminating in a new communications framework by 2015, to support the sector for the next ten years and beyond,” said Hunt in an open letter to those working in the telecoms, online media and digital content industries.
Respondents have until 30 June 2011 to submit their views. These responses will feed into a Green Paper and, following publication, there will then be “a long period of consultation with a view to producing a White Paper and Draft Bill by April 2013”, said Hunt.
The new Bill will update the current Communications Act, which became law in 2013 and covers all regulation for the telecoms, broadcast and media sectors.
