Hungary’s National Communications Authority (NHH) is to auction off additional spectrum in the 900Mhz and 450Mhz bands this year, according to local reports.
Gabor Kollath, a director at NHH, is cited telling a conference that the tenders will be aimed at ensuring efficient use of spectrum, while boosting national investment and broadband availability.
Such an auction could clear the way for a new entrant into Hungary’s telecoms market.
The country’s current mobile operators are Magyar Telekom, a subsidiary of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone Magyarorszag and Telenor Hungary.
One report cites Magyar Telekom at the conference arguing that any new spectrum should be reserved for existing telcos in Hungary, which would help get the country’s LTE networks off the ground.
Earlier this week, Telenor Hungary selected Chinese vendor ZTE to build a national LTE network, in a deal worth 200m deal.
However, when TelecomFinance called Magyar Telekom, a spokesman said no official statements had been issued regarding this. He also denied knowledge of any spectrum auction in the country.
The NHH was unable to comment before press time.
