Hungary’s National Media and Infocommunications Authority announced a two-round auction to award 10.8 MHz blocks of frequencies in the 900 MHz (E-GSM) band to be used for GSM, IMT/UMTS, WiMAX or LTE services.
Three blocks of 900 MHz frequencies are put up for sale. A 5 MHz block has a minimum price of Ft4bn (US$20.7m); five 1 MHz blocks have a minimum price of Ft700m (US$3.6m) each and finally a 0.8 MHz block is offered at a starting price of Ft560m (US$2.9m).
A new entrant will also have the option to buy 1800 and 2100 MHz frequencies.
Applications for the auction must be submitted by 20 October and the procedure will close on 12 December.
In accordance with European Union law, Hungary has made the necessary legislative amendments to allow 900 MHz frequencies to be used for broadband mobile services.
Currently, Hungary has three mobile operators: Deutsche Telekom-owned Magyar Telekom, Vodafone Hungary and Telenor Hungary.
