The Hungarian telecoms regulator has published a draft tender for spectrum licences for broadband services in an effort to boost competition in the telecoms sector and accelerate its development.
Unused spectrum in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1,800 MHz, 2,600 MHz and 26 GHz frequency bands will be made available, the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) said. Licences will run until 15 February 2029.
Feedback on the draft documentation may be submitted by 20 December.
The tender process will be officially launched on 30 December and applications are due 22 January. Bidding applications will be opened publically on 23 January.
The regulator explained that the tender is designed to boost competition, improve broadband coverage in urban and rural areas and lower prices for consumers.
The government expects the tender will raise between Ft120bn and Ft150bn (US$544.4m and US$680.4m).
In September, NMHH extended the licences of the nation’s three mobile operators for spectrum in the 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands from 2014 and 2016 respectively to April 2022.
Hungary’s mobile operators are Deutsche Telekom-controlled Magyar Telekom and the local units of the UK’s Vodafone and Norway’s Telenor.
