Chinese telecom equipment vendor Huawei Technologies is looking to invest about US$2bn in India in the next five years
The company will set up a new research centre in Bangalore and will increase the number of its engineers to 3000 from 2000.
Huawei explained that Bangalore is the company’s largest research centre outside of China and that it has operations in 19 Indian regions. The company employs about 6000 people across the country.
Recently, it was reported that Huawei was looking to create a security evaluation centre in India in order to allow the country’s law enforcement agencies to test equipment sold to local companies.
“The Indian market is too attractive for Huawei to ignore those fears,” a telecom expert told TelecomFinance.
“The company is seeking to do its best to alleviate the government’s concerns.”
A similar unit has just been set up in the UK, also to allay security fears.
In September, the Indian government lifted a ban on Chinese equipment manufacturers supplying equipment to Tata and its rival Reliance. The ban reportedly arose because of government concerns that broadband devices could contain spying technologies. Since then, Chinese vendors have signed several contracts with Indian telcos.
