Helios Towers Nigeria (HTN), which acquired Nigerian CDMA operator Multi-Links earlier this year, does not expect to operate the company in the long term, Reuters reports quoting the CEO of HTN parent company Helios Towers Africa.
CEO Charles Green was quoted saying that his company would not become a network operator in order to avoid ending up competing with its own customers.
South Africa’s Telkom sold loss-making Multi-Link to HTN for US$10m in June after loosing a legal battle against the tower company. Indeed, HTN had taken legal action for breach of contract to block the sale of Multi-Link to Visafone for US$52m, which Telkom had been agreed in March.
Green reportedly added that the ownership of Multi-Links came along as a debt/equity swap and another operator would operate the assets.
HTN was not immediately available for comments.
