US VoIP Laticom International will invest over US$50m in state-owned telco Hondutel in a deal signed on Tuesday, according to media reports.
The deal will last ten years and is focussed on developing telecommunications and data transport services in the country, reported local newspaper La Prensa.
The report quotes Laticom’s president, Crescencio Arcos, saying that the alliance will help to bring Hondutel into the twenty-first century.
He reportedly said that infrastructure would be modernised and the cost of broadband internet will be reduced.
The news comes after the Honduran Finance Minister was also reported by La Prensa last week to say that Hondutel only had a future with external funding.
The company is reportedly in talks with several other potential investors or partners. These include the US Maxcess Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes development programmes.
They also reportedly include the Honduran telcos Iptel and Teledinsa.
There is allegedly a split in the Honduran government, with some members wishing to sell 51% of Hondutel, while others want to keep the company under state ownership.
