Brazilian fixed-line telco GVT announced last week that it is launching services in Rio de Janeiro, signalling a wider move into the country’s cities.
The Vivendi-controlled company said that it plans to invest R$400m (US$238.8m) in Rio by 2012.
Its initial plan is to cover 21 districts of the city with access to high-speed internet (between 5Mbps and 100Mbps) and fixed-line telephones, with a network covering 50% of the city in 2012.
The move comes after the company began offering services in 10 additional Brazilian cities in 2010.
GVT’s CEO, Amos Genish, said that this would be a key year for GVT as it moved into Rio and Sao Paolo, as well as launching a cable TV service.
The company also said it expects to report strong growth last year.
Official figures will be released on March 1, but GVT said it anticipates an increase of 40% in net revenue to US$2.4bn.
