Mexican media group Grupo Televisa has received approval from the country’s antitrust regulator COFECO for its proposed acquisition of a 30% in the Mexican operations of NII Holdings, Nextel.
Grupo Televisa will pay US$1.44bn for the minority stake, and the regulator stated that this will allow the media firm to partner up with a mobile operator in the upcoming Mexican mobile licence auction.
The deal includes the option for Grupo Televisa to acquire a further 7.5% stake in Nextel Mexico in three to four years.
Nextel is fourth ranked in the Mexican mobile market, after Telcel, Telefonica and Iusacell.
