Telecoms regulator the EETT has granted Greece’s three mobile operators permission to participate in an auction for new spectrum licences in the 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands.
Incumbent OTE’s mobile unit Cosmote, Vodafone Greece and Wind Hellas submitted proposals and have all been pre-selected for the process.
The winners of the 15-year licences will be announced on 16 October.
EETT is auctioning six blocks of 2×5 MHz in the 800 MHz band, and 14 2×5 MHz blocks and four 10 MHz blocks in the 2.6 GHz band.
Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind are the country’s only mobile operators, and Vodafone and Wind share their 2G and 3G networks.
Greece last auctioned spectrum in 2011, when it raised a total €380.5m (US$519m) by selling frequencies in the 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands.
