The Nepalese government is still planning to sell a 30% stake in state-owned Nepal Telecom (NT), according to the country’s communications minister.
Minendra Rijal said yesterday that the government is close to calling for potential strategic partners to submit their proposal, according to the Himalayan Times.
The privatisation plan has been in the pipeline since 2010 but has reportedly been delayed by regulatory and administrative hurdles.
Last year a committee was formed, comprising two finance ministry representatives and four NT officials, to draft the conditions a new partner will need to meet.
NT, which is 91.5% state-owned, has a monopoly on fixed-line services in Nepal while it is second in the country’s wireless duopoly, behind TeliaSonera-held Ncell.
The telco is reportedly one of the few profitable state-owned companies but has faced growing competition from Ncell in recent years.
