Ecuador’s government is planning to award spectrum in the 1,900 MHz band to mobile operators in the short term, according to media reports.
BN Americas reported on Friday that the Minister for Telecommunications, Jaime Guerrero, had said that the two mobile operators Claro and Movistar have asked for additional spectrum to improve their mobile services.
Guerrero reportedly said that the government hoped to award the spectrum in the coming weeks.
Mintel recently announced ambitious plans to spread broadband access in the country, including an aim to get 75% of the population connected to broadband by 2017.
Mintel said at the time that broadband and mobile penetration in Ecuador would rise “considerably” with the implementation of government policies and the increase in services.
According to Mintel figures, mobile penetration had risen to 108% in the country by 2010.
