The Indian government is looking to charge new licensees for spectrum beyond 4.4MHz, according to reports.
Mobile operators, who already have spectrum, will be charged for spectrum they hold beyond the assigned 6.2MHz, the reports wrote citing telecom minister Kapil Sibal.
The fee to be charged is expected to be determined through an auction-based process in order to let market forces determine the cost of spectrum.
This potential new regulation comes in the wake of the 2G scam in India, which caused a US$40bn loss to the government and claimed the head of former telecom minister A. Raja.
The new telecom policy is also expected to encompass M&A regulations, as the Indian market is currently overcrowded with 15 operators.
