The Indian government is expected to unveil its National Telecom Policy 2011 to replace existing guidelines dating back to 1999, local reports wrote.
Newly-appointed telecom minister Kapil Sibal was also quoted saying that the Department of Telecommunications would hold consultations with key stakeholders to set up a transparent regime for licensing, spectrum allocation and sharing, MVNOs, M&A and telecom tariffs, as part of the government’s hundred-day agenda for the sector.
Home to some 15 operators, the local telecom industry is struggling with increasing competition, and has been hit by several scandals, including the 2G scam, which reportedly cost the country about US$40bn and claimed the head of former telecom minister A. Raja.
Earlier this week, several Indian telcos, including Etisalat DB, Loop Telecom and Unitech Wireless, reportedly paid penalties to the federal government for failing to launch their services within a year of receiving radio bandwidth.
According to local reports, the DoT had given them 15 days to pay up in order to avoid cancellation of licences amid the 2G scam saga.
