The government of Chile is in the process of introducing legislation that would allow the creation of a single telecommunications infrastructure provider to rent out infrastructure to third parties, according to local media reports.
This would allow foreign operators to concentrate solely on service provision, Chilean transport and telecommunications minister, Felipe Morande reportedly said at conference organised by PwC.
He said that creating a central infrastructure provider would be a core factor in developing competition in the mobile telecoms and digital TV markets.
The minister said that this model was widespread throughout the world. He used the example of British Telecom operating two separate companies – an infrastructure provider and a telecommunication service provider.
The initiative is one of a list of projects the government is introducing to stimulate competition. Other projects include number portability, auctioning new spectrum and potentially subsidizing telecoms service.
