Canadian telco Globalive, which launched mobile services on its own network two years ago, is in talks to acquire rival Mobilicity, according to a Bloomberg report citing a person close to the matter.
Globalive, which is majority-owned by Russian operator VimpelCom, will reportedly increase its customer by more than 50% in case of a transaction, which could take place as early as Q1 2012.
Bloomberg explained that Globalive is looking to increase its operations to compete with the likes of BCE, Rogers and Telus, which together control more than 90% of Canada’s mobile phone market.
Both Globalive and Mobilicity could not be reached for comment before the press deadline.
