Taiwanese WiMax operator Global Mobile may look at merging its operations with that of rival Tatung InfoCom, according to local website CENS citing Global’s chairwoman Rosemary Ho.
Tatung’s general manager I. C. Tseng reportedly said that the deal may not be a bad idea but added he has not received any notification of it yet.
Only weeks ago it was reported that another Taiwan-based operator, Vee Time, was set to acquire Vmax Telecom.
Once the merger is completed, the new entity may consider buying another such operator, Vee Time chairman Richard Lai was quoted saying at the time.
If completed, these deals would consolidate the Taiwanese WiMax market, currently populated with six such operators.
According to CENS Taiwanese WiMax carriers must complete 70% of their network roll out within five years before merging with another company.
The companies could not be reached for comment before the press deadline.
