The German telecoms regulator has taken the first step towards re-auctioning GSM spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands, which could happen as early as next year.
The current licences held by Deutsche Telekom, E-Plus, O2 and Vodafone are set to expire in 2016.
In a statement today the regulator argued that, because of the demand for spectrum being so high, it was obliged to re-auction the licences, as opposed to extending the current agreements.
Interested parties have until 4 October to comment on the proposal. No timetable has been decided upon yet, but the auction could reportedly happen as early as 2014.
