The Federal Network Agency, Germany’s regulator for electricity, gas, telecommunications, post and railway markets, has finished allotting frequencies in the 800 MHz band to German mobile network operators.
Telefónica 02 Germany, Vodafone and Telekom Deutschland all obtained blocks in the band. E Plus also obtained frequency blocks, but in other bands. In May, about 360 MHz from the 800 MHz, 1.8 GHz, 2 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands were auctioned for wireless access, and all four mobile operators obtained frequencies.
The total sum for the 41 frequency blocks came just under E4.4bn, with Vodafone winning 12 blocks, Telefónica 11, Telekom Deutschland 10 and E Plus 8.
“Now that all frequency blocks purchased have been allotted, fast broadband provision, including to rural areas, is now in the hands of the companies,” said in the statement Matthias Kurth, Federal Network Agency president. “With the allotment of the 800 MHz frequencies in particular, the regulatory conditions are in place for innovative applications to develop unrestricted access to fast Internet to be established under competitive circumstances,” he added.
