Russian satellite reception equipment manufacturer General Satellite is reportedly planning to invest in a new pay-TV platform in Pakistan.
It is likely that the new platform would be formed via a joint venture with a local partner, as Pakistan’s government has said it will not be issuing new licences, according to media reports.
General Satellite announced last month that is “actively involved in joint business with Pakistan” and plans to launch a Pakistani digital satellite project in the near future.
“It is assumed that by 2020 there will be about one million General Satellite subscribers throughout Pakistan,” added the statement.
The St Petersburg-headquartered manufacturer has joined the board of the Russian Business Council for Cooperation with Pakistan. Sergey Dolgopolsky, director of foreign broadcasting projects at General Satellite, was appointed vice-president of the organisation.
“Participation of General Satellite Corporation in the Board of the Russian Business Council for Cooperation with Pakistan is not accidental,” said Dolgopolsky in the announcement.
“This corresponds to our internal purposes; [furthermore] the experience of communication with Pakistani players could be useful for other Russian businessmen who plan to do business in the South Asian country.”
General Satellite entered a joint pay-TV venture in Cambodia last July with local partner the Royal Group of Companies. Dolgopolsky announced at the time that the JV was part of General Satellite’s five-year technological and investment strategy to launch broadcasting projects in Pakistan, Bangladesh, other Asian countries, the CIS and English-speaking Africa.
General Satellite was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
