Free Mobile, a subsidiary of Iliad, has been issued France’s fourth mobile licence.
Under the terms of the concession, the new licence holder had committed to open its network to MVNOs. It has also committed to launch services within two years and reach a coverage of at least 90% of the population within eight years.
The regulator said that the remaining spectrum in the 2.1 GHz, a 5 MHz block and a 4.8 MHz block, will be tendered soon and all market players will be allowed to bid.
Free Mobile has already said it would bid for the remaining spectrum.
The three existing operators, Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom, have taken legal action to stop Free Mobile to enter the French mobile market.
