France Telecom has invited the heads of Deutsch Telekom, Telefonica and Vodafone to meet on October 8 to discuss the possibility of creating a common operating system for smartphones, CEO Stephane Richard was quoted saying in an interview at Le Figaro.
Richard told the daily newspaper that operating systems were the Trojan horse used by Google and Apple to establish a relationship with operators’ customers. He added that a project could take different forms such as a joint venture or common applications development units.
“The meeting does not have a specific objective but it aims at looking at the different options to see if operators can put together a common project,” a France Telecom’s spokesperson said.
