Dutch spectrum agency Agentschap Telecom has announced there will be five participants in the frequency auction set to begin on 31 October.
Seventeen-year licences for spectrum in the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz and 2600MHz bands will be made available and new licensees may use the bandwidth however they wish.
The agency – part of the ministry of economic affairs, agriculture and innovation – said at least two new market entrants will have the opportunity to secure spectrum. Specifically, two blocks in the 800MHz band and one in the 900MHz band will be reserved for new players.
The Netherlands currently has three mobile operators: KPN, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile.
Potential new market entrants include cablecos UPC, owned by Liberty Global, and Ziggo and Swedish telecoms group Tele2’s local unit.
