Italian telcos Fastweb, Vodafone Italy and Wind have departed a committee that aimed to help roll-out a shared national fibre-optic network. They complaining that guidelines benefit reflect the wishes of Telecom, but not them, reports Dow Jones Newswires.
The Next-Generation Network (NGN) committee was set up to hammer out guidelines for Italy’s transition to a fibre broadband network.
According to the report, Italy’s three alternative operators felt the NGN committee failed to represent their contributions to its proposed guidelines.
Its break-up comes as Italian regulator AGCOM calls for cooperation to develop the network, which it sees as important for the country’s economic growth.
The alternative operators are planning to invest E2.5bn over five years to develop fibre-optic networks in the country’s 15 biggest cities.
However, Telecom Italia is so far refusing to back the JV, claiming a lack of demand for the network.
