Irish regulator Comreg has announced the results of Ireland’s 4G spectrum auction, which raised a total €481.7m in upfront fees.
Including annual licence fees totalling €372.95m for the right to use the spectrum until July 2030, the amount the auction will raise comes to €854.64m.
Incumbent operator Eircom’s Meteor brand, and the local mobile operations of Telefonica and Vodafone, acquired frequencies in the 800MHz digital dividend band, which became available on 24 October after the country’s analogue switch-off.
Meteor, Telefonica, Vodafone and Hutchison 3G won lots in both of the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands, which were previously only permitted for GSM services.
ComReg chairman Alex Chisholm said the 4G auction represented one of the most significant pieces of work undertaken by the regulator.
“ComReg welcomes the participation of the existing mobile network operators in the market in this auction,” said Chisholm.
“We see the results obtained as evidence of the dynamism and high potential of the Irish communications market, which has received today a powerful message of confidence from the international investment community.”
